MY SEEKER DRONE fed me a steady stream of information about the blood donation center and its occupants. A banner above the glass double doors encouraged pedestrians and traffic to, “Give Life Today”. I sat in a coffee shop across the street, not drinking the decaf coffee I’d ordered. Instead, I wore headphones I’d purchased at a nearby electronics store. I didn’t connect them to anything. Ideally, the other few patrons would just think I was nursing a drink listening to music and leave me alone.

If you needed blood to live, it made sense that you’d be in the business of collecting it. I wondered what percentage went to medical patients versus keeping the vampires alive. Didn’t anyone find it suspicious that there was a perpetual shortage?

Lia’s info haul from our brief exposure at Intaris revealed more about what I was dealing with. They were far from undead. They didn’t turn into bats, or need a stake driven through their heart. A stake would kill them - it just wasn’t required. My vibro knife would work just as well.

Sunlight would give them a tan, not burn their bodies. Most still tended to be night owls, though the reasons were unclear. They possessed unnatural speed, vision, and hearing. This came at the expense of poor taste buds, sharp teeth, and persistent insomnia. I had no idea what generated the cultish history surrounding them.

The center would close in five minutes. A few minutes ago, a rain storm rolled in and beat against coffee shop’s windows. It made it difficult for me to see, but the drone didn’t care. Weather reports indicated it wouldn’t stop all night, which just made my job easier. Fewer eyes on the street. Easier to slip in and out.

Like slipping in and out of Alaina.

A smile broke my stoic focus. I couldn’t fault her eagerness to please. I appreciated that she didn’t press harder to come along. I didn’t want to see her hurt.

Mates needed to be protected. It wasn’t just an ingrained habit. I truly liked Alaina. Despite my assurances to the contrary, I did worry someone would find her at the hotel. Lia was keeping a connection to its surveillance systems and would warn me if anyone approached our room.

My instincts told me I needed to fill her with child, then stash her some place safe outside the city. I should leave this coffee shop and do it now. Resume my mission later.

I shook my head. Focus.

It thrilled me we resonated, but certain lines of thinking led me to dangerous levels of distraction. ‘Lines of thinking’ defined as ‘anything related to sex, children, or Alaina’. Did resonance do that to her, too?

This planet held an attraction for me, despite my low expectations coming in. But I still wanted to get home, and that required figuring out what was blocking my portal beacon. Intaris was the best lead I had.

The last volunteers and employees across the street were catching cars or walking away under umbrellas. It was almost time to make my move.
